Beyond the Green: Why Your Turf Installation is Only as Good as the Base
5 Steps to a Professional, Maintenance-Free Lawn
Most homeowners choose artificial turf because they want to stop mowing and start relaxing. But the secret to a lawn that looks perfect for 15+ years isn’t actually the turf itself—it’s the engineering underneath.
At Rubber Floors and More, we follow a rigorous 10-step installation sequence designed to handle the unique clay-heavy soil and drainage needs here in Georgia.
1. The Foundation: Site Prep & Demo
A great lawn starts underground. We remove 2”–4” of existing grass and organic material. If you skip this, your lawn will eventually rot and sink. We establish a minimum 1% slope to ensure rainwater actually moves off your property.
2. Perimeter Locking
We install heavy-duty bender board or composite edging secured every 12 inches. This defines your elevation and acts as a “frame” that keeps your stone base and turf from shifting over time.
3. The Aggregate Base & Compaction
This is where quality installs separate from the cheap ones. We lay 2”–4” of crushed stone and compact it to 90–95% density using a plate compactor. A base that isn’t compacted will lead to dips and “puddles” in your lawn within the first year.
4. Precision Seaming & Grain Alignment
Ever seen a turf lawn that looks like a striped rug? That’s poor grain alignment. We ensure every roll faces the same direction and use professional-grade seam tape and adhesive to make joints virtually invisible.
5. Infill & Final Grooming
We don’t just lay the turf; we “finish” it. We apply 1–2 lbs per square foot of silica sand or rubber infill and use a power broom to stand the fibers up. This protects the backing from UV rays and gives the grass its natural, resilient feel.
The Bottom Line: We remove the grass, install a compacted stone foundation, and secure the turf so it looks and performs like natural grass—without the maintenance.
